Carinthia has its location in the Alps-Adriatic region to thank for its mild winter climate and above-average hours of sunshine. No wonder that Diex, the sunniest town in
Austria, with more than 2300 hours of sunshine a year, is in the heart of Carinthia.

The Adriatic low pressure zones that roll in from the south in winter provide reliable conditions for snow. And when nature underperforms, state-of-the-art technology steps in: Carinthia’s pistes ensure good, snowy skiing pleasure at all times, from November until the spring.

ALPINE SKIING
Carinthia’s mountains are as diverse as its people. Everyone can find the right piste here: from the high-Alpine downhill run to the gentle family slope, from the demanding mogul slope to the cool halfpipe, from the pristine deep snow slope to the snow motorway, from solo runs on the touring ski route to the safe nursery slope – with marvellous childcare.

To enable our guests to conveniently acquaint themselves with the 32 very different ski areas in Carinthia and East Tyrol, there is a single entry card for all of them: the top ski pass Carinthia-East Tyrol Gold – a kind of universal key to holiday pleasure. All in all, over 1000 km of perfect pleasure on the slopes.

ALL SORTS
Carinthia is the right place for all kinds of movement between snowy mountains and frozen lakes: horizontally on foot, with sticks, on cross-country skis, with snowshoes, in the pool; sloping on carvers, boards, toboggans or touring skis; vertically with crampons and ice picks on the ice cascade. Skating is a national sport in Carinthia: the province is home not only to two of the best ice-hockey teams in Austria, but also to countless lakes and ponds. The most famous of these is the Weissensee, where the enthusiastic Dutch have held their traditional speed skating marathons for more than 20 years.

You can also enjoy the perfect shopping experience in Carinthia: either at the large shopping centres in Klagenfurt (City-Arkaden) and Villach (Atrio), or in the charming, historic city centres.

PEOPLE
Carinthia is proud of Fritz “The Cat” Strobl. The downhill Olympic winner at Salt Lake City made his first turns in the snow on the Goldeck.

Thomas Morgenstern jumps ahead of everyone. The star from Spittal won the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin and the 2007/2008 Overall World Cup. In 2008/2009, he celebrated 3 World Cup victories and first place together with his team at the World Championships in Liberec.

At the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, he had a convincing win in the team jumping. Carinthia’s veteran and poster child remains Franz Klammer, who won Olympic gold in the downhill at Innsbruck in 1976.
